Work packages

1. Management and Coordination

The objective of this work package is to provide strategic and operational management of the project to ensure its successful completion within the timescales and resources provided.

2. Health Management

The network of experts that form the Health Management Thematic Group created through this work package consolidate existing industry knowledge and validate the ‘best practice’ identified through the ‘EU PiG Grand Prix’ contest. The work package will focus on two pig producer led challenge topics per year, which in year 1 were identified by the industry as ‘biosecurity’ and ‘optimising the use of antimicrobials’.

3. Precision Production

The network of experts that form the Precision Production Group created through this work package consolidate existing industry knowledge and validate the ‘best practice’ identified through the ‘EU PiG Grand Prix’ contest. The work package will focus on two pig producer led challenge topics per year, which in year 1 were identified by the industry as nutrient efficiency, involving ‘smart water usage’ and ‘feeding management’.

4. Welfare

The network of experts that form the Welfare Group created through this work package consolidate existing industry knowledge and validate the ‘best practice’ identified through the ‘EU PiG Grand Prix’ contest. The work package will focus on two pig producer led challenge topics per year, which in year 1 were identified by the industry around physical interventions, ‘tail docking’ and ‘castration methods’.

5. Meat Quality

The network of experts that form the Meat Quality Group created through this work package consolidate existing industry knowledge and validate the ‘best practice’ identified through the ‘EU PiG Grand Prix’ contest. The work package will focus on two pig producer led challenge topics per year, which in year 1 were identified by the industry as ‘reducing boar taint’ and ‘organisational innovations in supply chains to create more added value and a fair share in the benefits’.

6. Communication and End User Material

The overall objective of this work package is to maximise the impact of EU PiG through the development and implementation of a coherent communication, dissemination and exploitation strategy, incorporating public facing promotion, and the publication of end user material, including best practice tools.

7. Regional Knowledge Exchange

This work package establishes and coordinates the multinational network of Regional Pig Innovation Groups (RPIGs), which support knowledge exchange through local engagement with pig producers to identify and disseminate best practice. They also play a role in identifying emerging industry challenges for future EU PiG Grand Prix competitions.
