CRPA is organised in four departments - Agricultural Economics and Engineering: economic of supply chains, animal welfare, housing systems and technology, energy saving. Energy & Environment: biogas plants, gas emissions and manure treatment plants. Animal Husbandry and Product Quality: animal feeding, meat quality, food traceability systems. Dissemination and Communication: organisation of conferences and seminars, training courses, dissemination material and website.
The CRPA research laboratory facilities for consumers’ sensory analysis, olfactometry, analysis of raw materials for biogas plants and animal feed quality analysis.
Economic research on the efficiency of pig farms and of animal products based supply chains. Participation at the INTERPIG network on production costs in the EU countries, Canada, USA and Brazil. Research topics relate to animal housing systems, technologies and equipment to improve animal welfare. Analyses of techniques and practices able to reduce GHG and ammonia emissions. Research projects focused on the impact of feeding techniques and genetic improvement on pig meat quality. Experimental research related to the effectiveness of pig manure treatment plants.
CRPA is responsible for leading the activities in work package 5 (Meat Quality), focused on innovations and best practices able to improve pig meat quality, and coordinates the Thematic Group related to this issue. It is responsible for the economic impact of innovations concerning pig health in work package 2 (Health Management). CRPA is assisting the RPIG leader GSI in its activities to identify best practices related to pig health, precision farming, animal welfare and meat quality. Finally together with GSI, CRPA is involved in the dissemination activities through work package 7 (Regional Knowledge Exchange).
Kees de Roest, Head of Dept. Agricultural Economics and Engineering
Dr. Kees de Roest (Ph.D.), male. Graduated in Agricultural Economics (M.Sc.) in 1980 at Wageningen University. Since 1985 until now he is heading the department of Economic Research of CRPA. He gained a long research experience in the economic analyses of supply chains of animal products. A significant part of his work is dedicated to the technical and economic efficiency of livestock farms in different regions of Italy interesting dairy cows, beef cattle, pigs, sheep and poultry. Since 1995 he participated in several EU RTD projects on rural development, cross-compliance, collective marketing initiatives (COFAMI) and food supply chains (GLAMUR). In this last project the economic and environmental aspects of local and global pig supply chains have been analysed. He coordinated between 2012 and 2014 the DG AGRI tender concerning the “Assessment of farmers’ costs of compliance with legislation in the field of environment, food safety and animal welfare”. He participates in the INTERPIG network for Italy and in the Agribenchmark Pig networks. He is partner in many regional and national research programmes in Italy among which the annual programme for the analysis of pig production costs in Italy financed by pig producer associations.
Andrea Rossi, Head Office Meat Quality
M.Sc.), male. Graduated in Science of Animal Production at the University of Bologna, he is researcher under the department of Animal Husbandry since 1992. From 2003 he is project manager in charge of Monogastric (Pigs and Poultry) animals Division. He worked in several public and private projects in the field of pig production industry. In particular he is involved in quality topics about carcass quality and pork quality. He is part of the "pig carcasses" working group of the Italian Ministry (Mipaaf) and works in the EU Management Committee on Pig Meat for activities relating to the classification of pig carcasses, as "maximum national expert.
Paolo Ferrari, Senior Researcher Animal Husbandry System and Animal Welfare
Dr. Paolo Ferrari is senior researcher and project manager of the Research Centre for Animal Production (CRPA), focusing on the following research activities: welfare assessment of farm animals on farm, during transport and before slaughter; housing systems for intensive and organic livestock; socio-economic implications of measures and initiatives to promote animal welfare on farm. He was involved in: “Welfare Quality®, Integration of animal welfare in the food quality chain: from public concern to improved welfare and transparent quality” (FP7); “EconWelfare, Good animal welfare in a socio-economic context: Project to promote insight on the impact for the animal, the production chain and society of upgrading animal welfare standards” (FP7); “EUWelNet Coordinated European Animal Welfare Network” (DG Sanco). He is involved currently in the Welfare Quality Network and the Transport Guides project, pilot project on best practices for animal transport (DG Santé)
Claudio Montanari, Researcher in Economics of Farming Systems
Dr. Claudio Montanari (M.Sc.), male. He is an agricultural economist. His expertise lays in the field of the technical and socio-economic analysis of supply chains of beef and pig meat. He participates in the world network on beef production costs Agribenchmark Beef and the European network on pig production costs INTERPIG. He is responsible for the marketing information system of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. He carried out case studies in the EU project DOLPHINS “Development of Origin Labelled Products: Humanity, Innovation and Sustainability”, COFAMI Encouraging collective farmers marketing initiatives(COFAMI), Cross-Compliance, SOLINSA and GLAMUR. He is specialised in the analysis of the impact of innovations on production costs of animal based products.
